And Scott is on the phone and we're talking about the comments that people left to the post yesterday and the emails that they sent me and Scott says: "Yes, the public outpours.  London Preppy was the People's Princess and he will be missed".  Then the phone goes dead because it's run out of battery.  How apt.

troubled / gav: It's hard to shake the habit. What I certainly can't do again is write endlessly day after day. I think this is the kind of post that I will be doing from now on. When I think of something funny / interesting I want to share, I'll write it

trybaby: I'll let him know

gash: I'd easily volunteer my carcass for that

always: ...as the Prime Minister?

anon: Nah, it's a new show

grace: Don't worry, I've been in touch with Elton John and he didn't think this occasion was important enough for another Candle re-write

call it a comeback?

Anonymous said...

Well, what do you know, I'm not cold anymore, and you are back, kinda.

Over 100 comments, awesome.

For now on you should update only after 100 comments are made, that way you know that people still want you around.

And, you know, see how desperate we are.

London Preppy said...

alden / anon: The truth is, I don't know what to do with this blog. I like the interaction and I like writing it, but the extent that I did it left me with no time to do anything else. Maybe I should just write once a week or something so I can do my other writing during the rest of my time.

But would London Preppy Weekly work? Or was the relentless, incessant posting part of the claustrophobic charm?

gav dublin said...

Just the odd post would keep us happy preppy. And do think of some way to let us know when you are published again.

AlwaysReadySF said...

there's something so purely OCD about checking the blog daily and seeing that you are equally OCD and write daily, which clearly is a big attraction to a lot of people (or maybe only me, who gives a fuck...).

however, i do think that weekly posts would allow you to write something more meaningful and also focus your energies on the rest of your life.

Grace said...

Thank god for that!

Always thought 'Don't cry for me Argentina' would be more your style though...

Oldyeller said...

Once a week or so would work very well I think, although I was already starting to go through withdrawal this morning even though it had only been one day. I think a lot of us would be especially interested in hearing (periodically) about your experiences in Sydney. Of course, Vividblubbery will blast you for not really being dead.

dickophile said...

if you could at least do one of those every week even if its a quick one like this i think i can be okay. i think i can make it. at least until i kidnap you, trap you in my basement, give you a laptop, and turn you into my little blogger slave. cause im sure if you were in my position thats what you would do. and yes i would be coming down to the basement for some "alone time" every once in awhile.

p.s. im just joking. dont live in fear. i wont kidnap you. im just not taking this breakup very well. i still dont understand it. was it something i did? was it something i said? have you found someone better?

London Preppy said...

oldy: Maybe I just won't check then. And let's make a deal that nobody tells me either

dick: Very very good

You really ought to be getting paid for your talent and efforts, so I'm happy about your decision.

bregalad said...

Yayyayyy!
Me very much likey the idea of you posting at least once a week.

Or better still, consider this: Keep writing as usual, ok maybe with lower frequency, if you feel strongly about that. But if once in a while you feel that you shouldn't be spending too much time on writing the blog, take a (short) break.

I, and I guess many others, really like you, LP and the writing. So, please come back.

i call shenanigans! what better way to increase the LP idolatry then to fake a death. baby jesus warned about fake idols though... so take care against raining frogs and locusts and shit.

paul said...

i'm thinking about forming an LPA (london preppy anonymous) group in SF. For other people who log on every day to read as part of our routine. Look... you said you were done and here we are like trained monkeys logging on to read something that isn't there.

There will be 12 steps. Actually only 4 steps repeated 3 times each in honor of OCD.

Anonymous said...

Just when I was acclimated to the fact you were gone, you go and write another post. Sigh, what am I going to do without your daily insight....but alas, the weekly update shall suffice. Maybe since my reader status is still "trainee" I can take this time to read the older post and remember what it was like to wake up with a new LP post longing to be read....

I can't do it. It is so unfair.
I shed my tears. I deleted the bookmark (ok, off two of three computers). I stopped peaking at my blackberry two minutes before going to bed just to get a fix. I checked into rehab. It is time to move on. And now. This.

It is like offering gin to a Victorian prostitute.

It is like sticking your foot under the bathroom divider when Larry Craig is in the next stall.

It is like - as j would say - offering cake to a fat kid.

It is irresistible!

Give me the gin. Put the foot under the divider. Damn it, I was a fat 12 year old and I want the fucking cake.

Give it to us London Preppy. Come on. You know you want to you obsessive compulsive, pill popping, manic depressive, espadrille wearing, Anglophile mousakka eating tease!

London Preppy said...

Ha ha! I'm sorry. But please understand yankee. I'm feeling the same way on the other side. I try to get on with my so called life, but all I can think about on an hourly basis, is "this would make a good London Preppy story".

I keep making notes on my phone about things I need to write about and I pause people to get their quotes right. Notes and quotes that I won't use.

I'm addicted. And I need to kick it.

Meanwhile, I'd be happy to give up all my other activities (including writing aspirations, any career delusions, general "living") if somebody's willing to find me full time to write London Preppy.

For £50,000 I'll write every day for a year, for £200,000 I'll move into your house and write from your living room, for £500,000 I'll buy a house, you can also move in and I'll write from the living room, for £1,000,000 you can completely take me over, kill me and move my dead fingers over a keyboard to write, etc etc

I have enjoyed a number of your posts, and wish you the best of luck. Of course, I thought you were going to Australia on a convict ship or something. Should your writing efforts in fact appear in print, I hope you will alert your ardent fans. Really- Best of Luck to you!

So, what is the first thing I do this Sunday morning on the PC. Check London Preppy. Damn you LP. Damn you!

I understand this is a symbiotic relationship.

You are the shark, we are the remoras.

We are the bioluminescent bacteria to your anglerfish.

The Amazon fruit bats to your fig tree.

I am so not going to touch the inuendo in that one.

Any, I think someone wrote that LP dying was like the end of Sex and the City. So run with that analogy.

We don't get weekly episdoes, but we do get movies.

So you should be able to make the move from daily posts, to weekly posts and then a book.

It will help you and us off the adiction, until we end up the Egyptian Plovers to your crocodile - not officially a symbiotic relationship, but a nice one nonetheless.

LP, After a few days for the news to sink in I make my first leap into the world of blog commenting, apart from causing me to grapple with the concept of writing to someone who is in reality a complete stranger, part fictional character and from the other side of the world, living a life completely foreign to my own (maybe a little exaggeration there, boring bits likely just the same, all the rest – yes foreign) your supposedly final post has caused me to realise just now that my compulsive viewing of the LP writings is not a problem I suffer alone, therefore my need to write here today can be justified if only to myself and your other readers. I now find, with all the other comments, most of similar sentiment, I have the courage to admit my obsession and commit to writing a few rambling words.
Since coming across your blog not so long ago, I have found myself logging on each day for the sole purpose of reading the next entry and this has on numerous occasions caused me to ask if my internet activities of late are to the outside world considered acceptable? When next time a family member asks me what I have been up to for the last three months or so, can I tell them longing for the next LP entry? musing over what witty comments I might leave in response with the intention of charming LP? Committing my first act of internet stalking (innocent and not very successful) by checking out other readers comments, tracking back on old posts one by one, attempting to find locations where photos exist without the eyes blanked out with the signature red rectangles, even consideration of devoting a day to some google earth tracking, searching for anything that looks like a public swimming pool adjacent to office building and council flats (didn’t follow through – sanity still intact), all due to a person I have never/never likely to meet, a person who wears rubber masks and then posts videos of himself doing the same, a person who despite numerous posts regarding his wardrobe often seems to be lacking a shirt, a person who has a liking for prescription pills second only to my dearly departed grandmother, is this something I can tell them if I am to maintain any dignity at the next family gathering? But I guess in a few weeks time I will no longer have the option to be facing this dilemma, the LP posts and reader comments will have by then ended and I will have to tell them instead that I have found something new, something which fools me into believing I have a life and there is no void needing to be filled. I could find myself a new blog to read religiously, maybe one of the blogs that it now appears you anointed as your successors in one of your very last posts? Do I simply start at the beginning and read all of your entries from beginning to end ignoring the dates and pretending that each post is brand new? The option I am currently leaning towards is scouring all the old posts for the books you have mentioned and or read and after what has been a shamefully long while, force myself to read an actual printed on paper book? At least if I run with the last option, by the time I have completed this task, you will no doubt have that publishing deal and I can recommence the daily read! (the thought of this justifies the exclamation mark, it does, really).
And if all of that doesn’t suffice, I can always attempt interacting with real people again, mmmm, think I’ll still go with the book option.
All the best,
Eamon

wow..halfway through the London Preppy funeral the assembled blog addicts hear a knocking from inside the coffin..

Nobody knows if it was the death rattle or someone trying to come out.

It must be hard to stop writing, given how regularly you posted.

I would give the idea of a weekly post some serious thought. It would keep the punters happy and your name in the blogosphere, which isn't such a bad idea if you have ambitions of writing a book.

You don't want the cover to say 'Written by London Preppy who had a really popular blog about 3 years ago.'

But however you play it - your regular blogs will be missed.

Depending on the number of responses I will be glad to host the LP Anonymous meeting at Philz Coffee. A couple of conditions -
- there must be an even number of participants (odd numbers are not acceptable - i will explain later)
- no participant can have over 5 hours of sleep the night before. Extra credit for artificially induced sleep
- I am willing to share responsibility w/ AlwaysReadySF on determining the authenticity of participant
- red bars will be placed on a photo of the group and sent to LP as a show of support
- music will be place... i'm sure you can guess the playlists
- since my bf has only picture tattoos and no word tattoos he will not be invited
- donations will be taken to send LP a gift...showing our appreciation for all the blogging entertainment. Seriously folk, we give to public radio, we give to Obama and we give to the local bars; why not give to LP
- LP, we will ask for words in return, shared first with the SFLPA (San Francisco London Preppy Anonymous)... and then you can give it to others after a 3 day head start. We want to feel special

That's all. I've annoyed myself with this long comment...
